Reiki and the Nervous System: Why Healing Begins in Rest and Digest
Modern life often places our nervous systems under constant pressure. Between work, responsibilities and the pace of daily life, many people spend long periods of time in a heightened state of stress.
This is often referred to as the fight or flight response, where the body is alert, the mind is active and the nervous system is preparing to respond to perceived threats.
Recently, while speaking with students at University College Birmingham, we explored how important it is for the body to regularly return to the rest and digest state — the mode where the nervous system can relax, repair and restore balance.
This is one of the reasons practices such as Reiki can feel so deeply supportive.
Understanding the Nervous System
The nervous system plays a central role in how we respond to the world around us.
When we feel safe and relaxed, the body shifts into the parasympathetic state, often referred to as rest and digest. In this state:
• Breathing slows
• Muscles soften
• The mind becomes quieter
• The body can focus on healing and restoration
This is the state in which the body is able to repair, restore energy and process emotions.
However, when we experience ongoing stress or pressure, the nervous system may remain in a more activated fight or flight mode for longer than it needs to.
Over time, this can make it harder for the body to fully relax and restore balance.
Why Deep Relaxation Matters
Deep relaxation is not simply about feeling calm. It allows the body to move into a state where genuine healing and restoration can occur.
When the nervous system feels safe enough to soften, the body can:
• Regulate breathing and heart rate
• Release physical tension
• Process emotional experiences
• Restore balance within the body's systems
This is why practices that support relaxation can have such a powerful effect on overall wellbeing.
How Reiki Supports the Nervous System
Reiki works gently with the body's natural energy system. During a session, many people begin to experience a sense of deep calm as the body settles into a more relaxed state.
People often describe sensations such as:
• Warmth or gentle tingling
• Heaviness in the body
• A quiet or still mind
• A deep sense of rest
• A strong sense of being held and support
As the nervous system moves away from stress and towards rest and digest, the body can begin to rebalance itself naturally.
For some people this deep relaxation may also allow emotions to surface and release, which is a natural part of the healing process
The Body’s Natural Capacity to Restore Balance
The body already holds an innate capacity to heal and restore balance when given the right conditions.
Reiki simply creates a supportive space where the nervous system can soften, allowing the body to move into its natural restorative state.
In a world where many people are constantly switched on, moments of deep rest can be profoundly supportive for both physical and emotional wellbeing.
Supporting the Nervous System
Supporting the nervous system does not always require complex practices. Small moments of calm, stillness and awareness can help the body move towards balance.
Practices such as Reiki can provide a gentle opportunity for the body to pause, reset and reconnect with a deeper sense of calm.
